We also recycle 95% of the dye runoff we do have\u2014we filter it, clean it, and send it back to the dye bath, so almost nothing goes down the drain. That\u2019s a huge win over cotton, which is one of the thirstiest crops out there.<\/p>\n

What about durability? Because if a fabric falls apart after a year, you\u2019re just throwing it away sooner, which is way worse for the planet. Our stretch suede is tested to last for 50+ washes (for apparel) and 10+ years of use on furniture. We\u2019ve had clients who\u2019ve used our fabric for outdoor seating for restaurants that are still going strong after 8 years, no fading, no pilling, no stretching out. That means less waste, less need to replace products over and over. Compare that to a real suede jacket, which can get scuffed and stained super easily, or a regular cotton jacket that shrinks or fades after a few washes. Durability = sustainability, full stop.<\/p>\n

But let\u2019s not be Pollyanna here\u2014stretch suede isn\u2019t perfect. It\u2019s still a synthetic fabric, so it\u2019s not biodegradable. When it does reach the end of its life, it\u2019s not as easy to compost as a natural fabric. But wait\u2014here\u2019s another point: a lot of stretch suede is recyclable now. The answer isn\u2019t a straight \u201cyes\u201d or \u201cno\u201d\u2014it\u2019s \u201cit depends on the fabric.\u201d There\u2019s cheap stretch suede out there that\u2019s made with virgin petroleum, uses toxic dyes, and has a short lifespan\u2014that\u2019s not sustainable. But if you pick a stretch suede that\u2019s made with rPET, uses waterless dyeing, has a long lifespan, and has a take-back program to recycle at the end of its life? That\u2019s actually one of the more sustainable suede alternatives out there. Way better than real suede, way better than a lot of natural fabrics that use too much water or pesticides.<\/p>\n
